When pruning shrubs, avoid pruning when the flowers are in bloom, cut the branches down to the leaf line, and get rid of any dead or scraggly branches.

Julia and I had the opportunity on February 14th 2009 to help some friends who had moved into a house with a mature garden and some old fruit trees, mainly apples and 2 pears, which were somewhat overgrown. I am putting up half a dozen videos to show roughly what we did.

Summer pruning may not be needed every year or for every tree, but where excessive new woody growth is made, there are benefits from thinning out some of the new growth to regulate the tree.

Demonstration of one of the simplest and most useful techniques for grafting fruit trees. A ‘pencil’ of the scion wood, variety Queen Cox in this case, is used from storage, these need to be cut while the wood is winter-dormant eg February to early March, and stored cool and not too dry. I usually put them in a plastic bag in the fridge

This short video show an open centred bush tree which has been well pruned to space the fruit buds evenly through the space occupied by the overall volume of the tree. This was taken on 15th March, once the buds ‘burst’ the next stage is pink bud, then blossom which shoudl be in about 4 weeks depending on weather.

pruning a neglected and overgrown apple tree. Sorry that due to the dark background (one of our hedges) the contrast is a little poor, this was the nearest we had to a neglected apple tree and short of hanging a white sheet over the hedge for contrast, this was th ebest we could do.

The series of practical apple tree pruning tutorials continues with a look at the use of the pruning saw. You can use cheaper models (the Sandvik is OK) but for 3 years now we have only used the Silky Fox brand saws, specifically the Gomtaro Apple Ringo 300mm. This has a very thin blade and graduated tooth size which gives an exceptionally clean cut.

Stephen Hayes of Fruitwise Heritage Apples offers a series of video tutorials on pruning of apple trees. I do not claim to be an ‘expert’, I have learned about pruning from reading every book I could find and studying the trees themselves.
