The series of practical apple tree pruning tutorials continues with a look at the use of the pruning saw. You can use cheaper models (the Sandvik is OK) but for 3 years now we have only used the Silky Fox brand saws, specifically the Gomtaro Apple Ringo 300mm. This has a very thin blade and graduated tooth size which gives an exceptionally clean cut.

Further advice on apple tree winter pruning from Fruitwise Heritage Apples. Inevitably there is some repetition and overlap between these tutorials, no matter. I also apologise for having a sniffly nose-sorry, but it is cold! Here I look at thinning overcrowded fruit spurs, more of a problem on some varieties than others.

Stephen Hayes of Fruitwise Heritage Apples offers a series of video tutorials on pruning of apple trees. I do not claim to be an ‘expert’, I have learned about pruning from reading every book I could find and studying the trees themselves.
